Summer Camp at Home - Week 1: Starting Summer

I know the end of the school year seems a mile away, but now is the time to start thinking about how to keep your kids busy once summer break starts. Maybe you've chosen to enroll your kids in summer camp. Maybe your family is going on a long vacation. Or maybe you're doing a staycation at home.

Whatever your summer plans, there will inevitably be times when you hear the dreaded, "I'm bored!" Have no fear! Over the course of the next few weeks, I'll be sharing some themed activities that will keep your kids having fun and learning!

The first week of activities is themed for Starting Summer. This week will just be a fun way to ease into the new summer schedule, get outside, and cool down. Most of these are geared toward younger kids, but you could easily adapt them for older kids, too.

As always, you can find more summer ideas in my Summer Pinterest board.

Summer Printable Pack

The Summer Printable Pack from Fun with Mama has a fun beach theme (which could also work for a beach-themed week!) and learning activities that are perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. From math worksheets to writing exercises, this printable pack has it all. My kiddo was always fond of the dot marker sheets!

DIY Unpoppable Bubbles

Have you ever wished you could hold a bubble in your hand? What kid hasn't? Now you can with the easy-to-follow Unpoppable Bubbles instructions from Learning Resources. You do need glycerin for this, so keep that in mind before you start this activity.

Squirt Gun Painting for Kids

This Squirt Gun Painting activity from Fireflies and Mudpies gets you using your water blasters (or spray bottles) in a whole new way! Just fill them with liquid watercolors and spray away onto watercolor paper or poster board.

In a similar manner, Sisters Suitcase Blog has an idea for using a spray bottle or water blaster to create silhouette artwork. Place a black piece of paper in whatever shape you want on top of your paper, spray, let dry for a few minutes, and remove the black paper to reveal a colorful border around your shape! This Spray Bottle Silhouette Art activity calls for watered-down craft paint.

Make a Summer Bucket List

Since it's the start of summer, why not take a cue from Primrose Schools and Make a Summer Bucket List? These are all the things you want to do this summer. Write them down on popsicle/craft sticks or create a poster. Need ideas to add to your bucket list? The ideas can be as easy as "reading a book" or "baking cookies" to "visiting a local tourist attraction" and "having a picnic in the park". You can search Pinterest for more ideas, too!

Cake Batter Popsicles

These Cake Batter Popsicles from 2 Cookin Mamas are so good and easy to make! Making popsicles is such a fun activity throughout the summer. I purchased a popsicle mold from Target back in 2020, and we use it multiple times every summer! You can use dairy-free ice cream and milk, if you need to, and make sure your white cake mix also meets your dietary needs.
