America's Test Kitchen Cook for Your Gut Health Cookbook Review

If you suffer from indigestion or a chronic gastrointestinal disorder, then it's important to eat the right food to heal your gut. The recipes in America's Test Kitchen Cook for Your Gut Health cookbook are full of fiber, whole grains, healthful fats, and lean protein that "quiet your gut" and "reduce inflammation."

The best part of this cookbook is that most of the recipes can be made lactose- and wheat-free, as well as gluten-free, dairy-free, and allium-free. Just follow the substitutions.

While the recipes sound (and look) tasty, don't skip over the cookbook's introduction to speed right to the recipes. The book provides valuable information about the role of digestive organs and how what happens in your gut affects the rest of your body. This section of the book tells you how to stock your pantry and make your own gut-friendly sauces, bread, and more.

Then you're ready for the recipes, which cover the categories of breakfast foods and sides to soups, poultry, beef, seafood, and vegetable mains. So far we've made the salmon cakes with lemon-parsley sauce, and I have my eye on the pumpkin spice waffles, chicken and vegetable soup, vegetable and beef stew, and black bean burgers, to name a few.

A few things I will say about this cookbook:

  1. If you have Celiac disease and are on a gluten-free diet, this cookbook can be for you thanks to the many substitutions listed for a variety of recipes. Just be careful, though, if a recipe calls for old-fashioned oats that you're cooking with certified gluten-free oats. In fact, always make sure that everything you're cooking with is gluten-free.
  2. Not all of these recipes are kid-friendly. Did my 5-year-old like the salmon cakes? No, she did not. Are there so many recipes that I want to try but know I can't because my kid (and possibly my husband) won't eat them? Yep. I wish the cookbook offered tips for storing leftovers because if something makes four or six servings but I'll only be eating one serving at a time, I want to know if the rest of the meal is going to keep well overnight in the fridge for lunch.
But still, I think this cookbook is worth it, especially if you're trying to cure/help your gut issues.
