Decluttering at the Speed of Life - Book Review

If your house is a mess and you don't know where to start, then read Decluttering at the Speed of Life by Dana K. White. I think it could change your life. Or at least change your mindset so that you see and think about your clutter differently, and then you can hopefully let go of it more easily. Or figure out where in your home it actually goes instead of on the floor of your living room.

The whole first section of the book takes you through how to change your mindset before you even begin to declutter. And then it's off to decluttering room by room! There are steps to follow to keep you on track and two questions to ask yourself to help you figure out if an item is a keeper or should be donated.

A word on donations. Dana is big on donations, and you know what? So am I! For a long time I thought I would keep certain things around to sell on online garage sale sites but I just don't have the time to deal with that. What I want more than making $5 is to get stuff out of my house NOW.

There is a website I've been using called Give Back Box where you pack up your donations in any box, go to the website to print a free mailing label, schedule a pick-up with USPS or drop off the box at the post office, and your donations get sent to the nearest receiving charity. I've had USPS come pick up my boxes, and I love that I don't have to go anywhere and figure out when would be a good time to stop at Goodwill when I'm out with my toddler. (Answer - never.)

This book also offers advice on helping friends and family declutter, though you should probably have your own business taken care of first. Leading by example is a great way to be helpful, especially when it comes to your immediate family members.

I haven't had a chance to put this book into practice yet, but I have plans to! What I like is that it's not about spending a whole day decluttering the entire house. If you only have a few minutes to do one room for whatever reason, then you can. And because you'll be following these steps, you won't be left with a bigger mess if you have to stop mid declutter. Dana had many years to come up with her decluttering plan (she's been there, done that!) and she's really created a great system.
