How to Earn the Daisy Friendly and Helpful Petal and Considerate and Caring Petal in One Meeting

Because there were just so many badges to earn as a Daisy and our first year was an abbreviated one, I wanted to save time by pairing up some of the petals. So we earned the Friendly and Helpful Petal (yellow) and Considerate and Caring Petal (light green) in one meeting. You don't buy these individually. They are only available as part of the Daisy Petal set.

Here's what we did to earn these petals:

Friendly and Helpful - Sunny's petal (yellow)

1. Read Sunny's story

I sent Sunny's Story from the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) to the parents and asked them to read the story ahead of time. I also asked them to have their girls draw a picture of their favorite part of the story. At the beginning of the meeting, we talked about the pictures the girls drew. Then, I asked them for ways that they can be friendly and ways that they can be helpful both at home and at school.

2. Make a mural of Sunny's story

I asked the girls to be helpful by putting glue on the back of their pictures so that I could stick them to a piece of posterboard to create a mural.

3. Practice being friendly and helpful

Along with the girls helping me glue their pictures to the posterboard, we did an activity later in the meeting that had each girl helping to create Thank You cards. More on that in a second.

Considerate and Caring - Zinni's petal (light green)

1. Read Zinni's story

We read Zinni's Story, which I got from the VTK.

2. Come up with ideas on how to be like Zinni

After the story, we talked about how Zinni forgot to be considerate and caring, and what reminded her to act in a considerate and caring way. I asked for ways that the girls have acted considerate and caring like Zinni.

3. Practice being considerate and caring

To practice showing caring, friendliness, consideration, and helpfulness, we made Thank You cards to send to my brother-in-law who was stationed overseas with the military at that time. Each girl got a mini bucket filled with random arts and crafts supplies. I also gave each girl a blank card. The girls could decorate their card however they wanted, but when I rang a bell, they had to pass their card to the girl on their right, so that eventually, each girl would have a chance to add her own touch to each card.

I brought up the idea of a Take Action Project again. (Spoiler alert: we actually did not do a Take Action Project as Daisies.) I asked girls why it's important to help other people, and then tried to reinforce what we'd learned in the meeting by asking of ways to be helpful and ways to be considerate and caring.

What activities did your Daisy troop do to earn these two petals? Did your troop ever do a Take Action Project as Daisies?
