My Girl Scouts troop earned the Brownie Making Games badge at our first indoor meeting of the year. I actually thought this would be easier to earn, but that was before I read through the requirements to earn the badge. I had envisioned having a game night for this, but the actual instructions were a bit different.
1. Try a scavenger hunt
Luckily, the library where we held our meetings always has a scavenger hunt in the children's section. So upon arrival, I snatched up a few sheets of the printed hunt, and then gave the girls the sheets and some pencils and had them go through the children's sections searching for the items listed. (I believe it was a dinosaur-themed hunt.)
2. Make up a mystery game
For this, we played the Mystery Box game. I had a box inside of which I secretly put random items. The girls had to take turns feeling inside the box and guessing what was inside. They did a pretty good job at this.
3. Create a party game
Something I knew the girls liked to play was Freeze Dance, which is a really fun game to play at parties. But we changed it up a little bit and used the basic gist of the game to play Dancing Cows. When the music played, they had to dance like cows, but when the music stopped, they had to drop to the ground and be "dead cows". Kind of morbid, I know, but I got the idea from another Girl Scouts leader blog, and my girls though it was really silly. From there, I had them choose different animals and different activities (jumping dinosaurs, dancing cats, etc.), and we played a few more rounds of the game.
4. Change the rules
Another way we changed the rules of a game is to do a classic Girl Scouts game - the Pancake Relay Race. Instead of a traditional relay race, the girls had to flip pancakes while running.
Learn from my mistake and ONLY PLAY THIS GAME OUTSIDE or with fake pancakes. We used real pancakes, and they crumbled upon impact with the carpeted floor. It was a mess!
5. Invent a whole new sport or game
I printed out blank board game templates that I found online by doing a simple Google search. I glued the templates onto posterboard to make them sturdy. Each girl got one and created her own board game using markers and stickers to decorate the board.
Has your troop earned the Making Games badge? What type of games does your troop like to play?
