The Catch Book Review

I was invited to read an e-ARC of Alison Fairbrothers' new novel The Catch, and I'm so glad I was. This was a book that I finished in one day!

When Ellie's father dies, he leaves her an unexpected gift. Instead of the baseball that he always kept nearby when writing, the thing that Ellie thinks is a sentimental totem for the two of them, he leaves the baseball to someone else. Someone the family has never even heard of.

This prompts Ellie to uncover who this mystery person is and what kind of person her father really was. As she discovers more and more about her father's past, she has to come to terms with what she wants for her own future. Is she in a relationship with someone who is doing exactly what her father did throughout all of his marriages? What and who does Ellie really want in her life?

I enjoyed reading about Ellie and her quest, understanding from a personal level the grief from suddenly losing a parent. The novel has a fun cast of characters, from Ellie's stepmother and half-siblings to her guest house roommates. If you're looking for a book to read with your book club, I think this one would provide a lot of discussion.

The Catch is published by Random House and will be available to purchase on June 21, 2022. I received a free e-ARC in exchange for this review.
