Lily King is one of my favorite authors, having also written the amazing Writers and Lovers and Euphoria before that. There are 10 stories in her short story collection Five Tuesdays in Winter, which was published earlier this year. All of the stories, with their variety of characters and settings, were great, but I do have some favorites.
One of my favorites was the title story “Five Tuesdays in Winter”, a sweet love story about a single bookshop owner, his teen daughter, and the female employee he has a crush on. I also liked the mother-daughter relationship in “North Sea” and the bittersweetness of a grandfather talking to his granddaughter who is in a coma in “Waiting for Charlie”. But the last story, “The Man at the Door”, really surprised me with its ending. It’s a relatable story to anyone who has ever tried to work from home while caring for a baby or small child, but then it goes a little supernatural with the arrival of a stranger carrying an advance review copy of the protagonist’s novel - the novel that she hasn’t yet finished writing. If you want to be entertained in bite-size ways (maybe you like reading a story a day), then I'd highly recommend this collection.
