In my household, we eat gluten-free and dairy-free due to food issues. I've been trying very hard to introduce more plant-based meals into our dinner rotation, but when you've got a picky 5-year-old and a husband who calls it "weird mommy food", sometimes it feels like you just can't win.
But maybe the new cookbook Plant Food is Medicine by Nastasha McKeon can change that. Or at the very least, it can allow you to make small changes for yourself.
McKeon is the founder and CEO of Choice Superfood Bar and Juicery in California. If you don't live in Cali and can't have someone make this food for you, McKeon is offering a collection of more than 100 plant-based and gluten-free recipes in her cookbook for you to make in the comfort of your own home.
Are some of these recipes hard? Yeah, especially if you've never tried juicing or making your own almond milk before. Will you need special equipment? Yes; see the juicing and making your own nut milk. But are these recipes better for the planet, your health, and the animals? YES!
McKeon starts off the cookbook by giving you a brief explanation of why she went plant-based and how she started Choice. She directs you to other resources so you can learn more, too. And then she takes you through 13 categories of foods, from the aforementioned juices and nut milks to smoothies and bowls, wraps, soups, snacks, sweet treats, and more. Not gonna lie - the Sweet Treats chapter is probably my favorite. I mean, hello, gluten-free pumpkin loaf! But I'm also interested in trying the Salted Caramel Smoothie and the Golden Latte (coffee-free!).
Like I said, going plant-based is a hard transition, especially when you're trying to convince kids who are already addicted to Kraft Macaroni and Cheese. But I think this cookbook provides some good starting points and challenges you to experiment with a Meatless Monday every so often.
Plant Food is Medicine is published by Authors Unite Publishing and is available to purchase now. I received a free review copy.
