Mommin' It Book Review

Motherhood ain't easy. But that's why mum influencer Harriet Shearsmith has written Mommin' It, a book filled with tips and tricks covering the topics of food, home, travel, body + beauty, and life. Pre-order a copy of the book, which comes out May 4, as a Mother's Day gift for the mom-to-be or new mom in your life!

I loved the design of this book. It's not a traditional chapter book with lots of text. Instead, the information is presented in bite-size chunks, perfect for busy moms, and you'll see colorful illustrations of Harriet and her family on each page.

In the food section, Harriet offers advice on picky eaters, as well as recipes that kids can help you make. In the home section, read about her favorite cleaning methods for all areas of the house, as well as what chores kids can help you do. The travel section offers tips for any type of travel you might consider doing with your child. Body + Beauty aims to give moms some relaxation and body positivity. And Life discusses how to navigate relationships with your spouse and friends after having a kid.

The author is a UK-based mum, and so some of the information in the book is definitely geared more toward a UK audience. I hardly think that day trip suggestions in England are going to be helpful for a mom in Missouri. (And is it just me or does the term "staycation" imply that you DON'T go anywhere but rather take time off and STAY HOME? For me, any time you stay in a hotel somewhere for a few days, even if it is local, that's still a vacation. But I digress...)

The version I read was an advance copy, so I'm not sure if the U.S. version will be adapted a bit more for U.S. audiences, aside from changing the title from "Mummin' It" to "Mommin' It". If you need help converting a recipe from grams to cups or Celsius to Fahrenheit, I guess just ask Google.

I wrote at the beginning of this review that this book would be ideal for moms-to-be and new moms, but as long as you have a child who is not yet a teenager, you'll find some wise gems within the pages of this book. Keep it out on your nightstand and read a page or two at a time. Even those of us who are already in the trenches will be nodding along with Harriet and thinking, "Girl, preach!"

Mommin' It is published by Kyle Books and will be available on May 4, 2021. I received a free advance PDF version of the book in exchange for my review.
