6 Snowman Crafts for Kids

How many times has it snowed where you live this winter season? In my neck of the woods, we've had three days of snow since December. But it doesn't matter if there's snow on the ground or not. You can still have fun making a homemade snowman with these fun snowman crafts for kids. Bonus: these are some of the easiest snowman crafts to make!

Paper Plate Snowman

One of the easiest snowman crafts for toddlers or preschoolers is to turn a paper plate into a snowman. All you need is:

  • a white paper plate
  • construction paper cut into shapes
  • cotton balls
  • glue
Start by cutting out the center of the paper plate, and then gluing cotton balls or white pompoms all around the plate. Add a white construction paper circle (or mini white paper plate) to the top as the head and embellish with other construction paper pieces for the eyes, nose, mouth, scarf, etc.

My daughter and I used thin popsicle sticks as the arms, googly eyes for the eyes, and washi tape for the scarf. Get creative and use whatever arts and crafts supplies you have on hand.

Fill the Snowman

If you're looking for snowman activities for toddlers, then this fine motor skill activity will be a fun one. You'll need:

  • empty plastic bottle
  • cotton balls
  • tweezers or tongs
Basically, kids use the tweezers to pick up the cotton balls and place them in the empty bottle. It's even more fun if parents decorate the plastic bottle to look like a snowman beforehand. I used googly eyes, stickers, and ribbon.

Snowman Name Craft

There are snowman crafts for preschoolers that also have educational benefits, and this is one of them! You don't need many special supplies, just:

  • construction paper
  • black marker or crayon
  • glue or tape
You'll need to do some prep work on this one: cut out white circles and a black hat, decorate one of the circles to look like a snowman face. Then, kids use the marker to write the letters of their name in the other white circles. Put the letters together in order underneath the snowman face.

For younger kids, a parent can write the letters of the child's name, and the child can practice letter recognition and spelling their name by finding the right letters and putting them in order.

Snowman Stress Balls

Other snowman project ideas include these easy DIY stress balls made out of white balloons. Kids will love the tactile play of squeezing the snowman stress balls, while parents can keep theirs handy for whenever the kids are stressing them out.

I found the "recipe" for this silly preschool snowman craft from And Next Comes L. All you need is:

  • white balloons
  • black and orange markers (Sharpies work best)
  • a funnel
  • materials to fill the balloons, such as rice, Play-Doh, beads, water beads, corn starch, etc.
Fill the balloon with your choice of filling (the funnel helps here), tie off the balloon, and decorate the balloon with a snowman face.

What would be really fun is to make a bunch of stress balls and fill each one with something different. Then play a game comparing how each stress ball feels and having kids guess what's inside!

Glitter Snowman

Some parents freak out about glitter, but kids love it, so I think it's worth the mess. To make a snowman craft with glitter, you'll need:

  • glitter
  • glue
  • construction paper
Now, I followed the directions from I Heart Crafty Things and first made a watercolor background on some watercolor paper, which I happened to have in my art stash. You totally don't have to do this! But I really liked the way it looked.

But no matter what background you're using, squirt circles of glue onto the surface, and then pour glitter on top. Shake off the excess and let dry. Then decorate your snowman using whatever craft supplies you want!

Snowman Ornament

How about getting a head start on 2021 Christmas decor with easy snowman ornaments? One of the snowman ornament craft ideas that I've done involves the use of these supplies:

  • clear plastic ornament balls
  • cotton balls or white pom poms
  • Sharpie marker
I've purchased clear ornament balls at Michael's and Dollar Tree before. They are really easy to open and fill. Because you are making a snowman, fill yours with cotton balls or white pom poms, and then decorate the outside to look like a snowman face. You could even glue on googly eyes or use glittery pipe cleaners to add ear muffs. Kids will love hanging their DIY snowman decorations on the Christmas tree!
