Raising Your Kids Without Losing Your Cool Book Review

Shantelle Bisson's book Raising Your Kids Without Losing Your Cool contains parenting advice that is especially helpful to:

  • the newly pregnant
  • those who have just given birth
  • couples considering having a child
That's not to say that this book won't help you if you already have kids, but the first few chapters are specifically geared to moms and dads who are preparing for their new arrival.

The chapters from the middle on do contain advice that all parents can use no matter where you are on your parenting journey. Tips about screentime, putting your kid's pictures on social media, and taking time for yourself (and your spouse) will definitely make you think about your own parenting practices, whether you have a newborn or a 5-year-old.

Bisson is a parenting expert in that she's successfully raised three functioning adults. There was so much she didn't know about being a mom back then, so this book is her way of helping today's parents as they navigate through the unknown.

Take from it what you will. You might not like that she advocates spanking or you might be one of those parents who wants to throw a gender-reveal party. Some of this is just Bisson's opinion on the matter, so read it, digest it, and then do what you think is best. That includes getting an epidural or not, breastfeeding or not, whether baby sleeps in his own crib or a bassinet by your bed. (Seriously, never in the family bed, you guys. Why take the SIDS risk?) So much of parenting is using your intuition and doing what is right for your family.

But what worked for Bisson's family might just work for yours.

Raising Your Kids Without Losing Your Cool is published by Dundurn and is on bookstore shelves now. I received a free e-book for review.
