Alphabet Summer Letter B Week Recap

After doing our first vowel last week, we went back to consonants with the letter B.

And don't forget, there are more activities to check out in my Alphabet Summer and Kid School Pinterest boards. Make sure to follow them because I'm always adding something new!

Monday we read The Very Lonely Firefly and made bugs out of construction paper. This activity went over much better than I thought it would. In fact, after doing our letter B dot marker page and coming up with B words, I tried to get my daughter to play a bug matching game using pieces we'd received in a past Koala Crate. But she just wanted to make more bugs!

Part of the reason for choosing the letter B this week was because we were growing butterflies in our Insect Lore Butterfly Garden! And by Tuesday, four of our butterflies had emerged from their chrysalides. So we read Pinkalicious and the Little Butterfly, made our own butterflies out of construction paper and paper plates, and fed our butterflies nectar (sugar water). We also practiced tracing upper- and lowercase letter Bs.

Wednesday was a break from the letter B, as we had at-home Vacation Bible School in the morning. We had to make a boat (starts with the letter B!) out of tinfoil and see if it would float or sink when marbles were placed on top. Not the greatest activity for my 4-year-old. So I tried to get her interested in some science experiments using baking soda (starts with the letter B) and she was just not in the mood. Our new Hot Wheels track set was definitely her main focus.

Thursday was saved by Little Passports and Koala Crate. We got both of our monthly kits at once, and spent Thursday morning and Thursday afternoon learning about celebrations around the world (keeping it B-themed with birthdays and Bastille Day!) and glowing nature (made our own stuffed firefly - a bug!).

We had a different schedule on Friday, but we did manage to read How Many Bugs in a Box and finally play the bug matching game from last month's Koala Crate.

Saturday we read our own copy of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, and then practiced our scissor skills to make a color chain in the order of colors listed in the book.

And the plan for today is to read We're Going on a Bear Hunt and do a variety of bear hunt activities, including making a bear hunt map, making bear binoculars, and going on an actual bear hunt that might culminate in us finding.... a real bear! Okay, it's going to be a toy, but...

What activities have you been doing with your kids this month?
