Hearing God - Book Review

Today is the release of Nathan Finochio's Hearing God: Eliminate Myths. Encounter Meaning. I honestly do not remember requesting a free ARC of this book from the publisher, though I am part of the Waterbrook & Multnomah blogger team, and yet there the book was in my mailbox not too long ago. I was excited to read the book because I thought perhaps it was meant to come to me - whether I had requested it or not.

Did I discover the secret to hearing God's voice? Perhaps. This book didn't change my life, but it did offer some insight into what could be hindering me and others from hearing what God is saying to us. (Still kind of unsure about the chapter on prophecy, but that's because as a Lutheran and then a Methodist, that was NEVER part of the religious teaching).

This book takes you through the many distractions that we need to cut through to get to God. Some of my favorite chapters were actually toward the end of the book. In talking about "Disposable Nature", Finochio writes that we shouldn't disconnect from nature. We should get out into God's creation and hear what he has to say to us through nature. This really reminded me of Reforesting Faith and something I read last week in the Core 52 devotional (review on that coming soon).

I also liked the chapter on "Greener Grassses" because it totally spoke to me about something I'm currently going through. The chapters on "Solid Water" and "Boring God" were also good because they talked about where we get our faith from (and what faith is and isn't) and challenged my assumptions of the type of people God might speak through to reach me.

The author has an interesting writing style, meant to be conversational or like he's delivering a sermon. There were many jokes and comic asides, though I found them to be a little too much.

Still, there were many good take-aways from this book, so if you're feeling lost in your journey with God and you're tired of other people telling you "God just told me..." all the time, then you might want to pick up this book.

Hearing God is published by Waterbrook and is on bookstore shelves now. I received a free ARC in exchange for my honest review.
