He/She/They Book Review

Hi, I'm Laurie and my pronouns are she/her. Your pronouns may be different from mine. Your pronouns may be different than the ones assigned to you at birth.

Just as I would expect someone to respect me and correctly say my name (they don't...), someone else might expect you to respect them by using their correct pronouns.

It's really not as big a deal as some white, cisgender people make it out to be.

And that's what author Schuyler Bailar explores in his new book He/She/They: How We Talk About Gender and Why It Matters. This book is for transgender people, allies, and anyone questioning the validity of the trans experience.

As the back of the book states, "We all have an experience with gender - trans or not."

I learned a lot from this book: correct terminology, what not to ask a transgender person, how to be a better ally, and what the trans experience is like. Bailar walks us through his experience as a transgender athlete, and how he came out to his family, friends, and teammates.

This book matters in today's culture of toxic masculinity, anti-trans legislation, racism, and sexism. Bailar's well-written and well-researched book shows how the experiences of  "others" matter, how everybody's life matters, and how everyone deserves to be who they are.

He/She/They is published by Hachette Go and is available to purchase now. I won a copy of the book through an Instagram giveaway.
