I know The Carnivale of Curiosities came out over the summer, but I found the novel perfectly suited for a fall/close-to-Halloween read.
The novel opens with a dead girl rising from the dead. And the rest of the story introduces us to how this girl came to be in the hands of Aurelius Ashe and his associate Pretorius.
There's a wealthy man wielding his power to save his adopted sister no matter what. And there's the adopted sister, Charlotte, willing to do as her protector deems fit even though she desires her escape from him. There's Ashe's carnivale, a troop of human curiosities that leave audience members curious whether they witnessed an illusion or true magic. After all, how does Lucien create and control fire? And are the rumors about his clockwork heart true?
This was a very interesting cast of characters, and I liked how the story weaved everything together. Things you read at the beginning of the book will come back around toward the end, leaving you surprised.
If you like magic and gothic stories, then you'll enjoy this new novel.
