Peaceful Discipline Book Review

You've probably heard of "gentle parenting", and maybe you've even tried it - with or without success. Sarah R. Moore's Peaceful Discipline: Story Teaching, Brain Science, and Better Behavior is an extension of the "gentle parenting" concept that encourages using play and storytelling to address problematic behaviors and big feelings.

The first thing I will say about this book is that I absolutely hated the typeface chosen. I don't know what it is, but to my eyes, it looked like the words were stamped on the page, but not all parts had enough ink. It took some time for my eyes to adjust.

If you can get past that, then you will find some good advice in the book. Even children's musician Raffi gives this book praise in the opening pages!

I bookmarked pages about helping your child identify his or her emotions on their own, consent and bodily autonomy, keeping a positive emotional tone with your child, the three steps of the HUG Process, a reminder to stop telling my child she is okay, and creative ways to help children express how they're feeling.

Now, the main thing in this book is Story Teaching, or using storytelling to help children combat a problem, such as an unwillingness to go to bed or anything the child fears. You might be wondering, "Well, how am I supposed to come up with these stories? I'm not a storyteller." Have no fear! There are example stories at the end of the book, or you could also find a children's book at your library that touches on the topic you need. Moore says that you don't need to be a professional children's book author to come up with engaging stories, and along with her story examples, she does offer other advice about how to create stories that will resonate with your children.

I think this book might be best for parents with young children and soon-to-be parents, so if that's you, and you want to relieve yourself of "parent guilt" and make life raising kids easier, then pick up this book.
