Well, at least I can say that I finished all 455 pages of this novel. But I can't say that I enjoyed it.
Gina Apostol's La Tercera is about family, mothers and daughters, and how the past affects the future. The book had such potential!
Unfortunately, it was way too long, has too many characters to keep track of, is written in a non-traditional novel style, and uses foreign languages without translation. Not only did I not know how to pronounce everything, I also didn't know what the characters were saying! I felt like I was walking into the middle of an inside joke. Am I supposed to understand this?
There's a part in the novel where the main character says "It's all Greek to me", and I couldn't agree more!
While there were sections of the novel that I liked, they were few and far between. I guess I wanted more between the mother and daughter. At the very least, I wanted more notice that we were switching from past to present. I also wanted more clarity in the writing.
This one just didn't do it for me.
La Tercera is published by Soho Press and is available to purchase now. I received a free review copy from the publisher.
