Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing Book Review

Even if you've never been part of an MLM (multilevel marketing), you probably know someone who is or have seen social media posts about them. I once got interested in an MLM that someone I knew through Facebook was part of, and she invited me to a Zoom call with other people on her team. It all sounded interesting... until the team leader talked about how it's not selling products that makes you money. It's recruiting other people to join the team.

Uh, pyramid scheme much?

So I didn't need any coercion to read Emily Lynn Paulson's book Hey Hun: Sales, Sisterhood, Supremacy, and the Other Lies Behind Multilevel Marketing. Paulson was part of an MLM for years, and she became one of the organization's top earners. However, her success is not typical, and soon Paulson found herself becoming disillusioned with the organization's policies and procedures, not to mention icky when asked to use her alcoholism as a selling point for the MLM. (I've heard from a former co-worker that her MLM tried to get her to use her illness to sell their products.)

This book includes Paulson's experience, as well as research and facts about how MLM's, just like cults, seduce women (mainly white women) and keep them invested in the MLM despite not making any money - and in some cases losing money.

I included this book in my 5 New Books to Give as Mother's Day Gifts post. If you pre-ordered this book for your mom or the "mom" in your life, let me know! You'll want to get a copy for yourself, too.

Hey, Hun is published by Row House and will be available to purchase tomorrow, May 30, 2023. I received a free review copy.
