Celebrating Earth Day Through Play!

Kids can learn so much from playing, including about sustainability and the environment. The Genius of Play program put together a list of play activities to help parents engage their children in celebrating Earth Day today and every day! As a Genius of Play ambassador, I get to share them with you!

Egg Carton Butterfly

To make this recycled materials butterfly, you'll need an empty cardboard egg carton and whatever art supplies you have. This activity is a great way to show kids how to reuse or upcycle something, while also engaging their creative, cognitive, and emotional skills.

Mud Fun

You'll need a rainy day for this one! Grab rainboots and old clothes to go outside and play in the mud. Bring out action figures, cookie cutters, toy vehicles, and anything else that might be fun for digging and exploring. Don't be afraid to let kids get dirty - playing in dirt builds stronger immune systems.

Twin Plants

This science experiment shows kids how to grow a plant from another plant. Some patience will be required for this one as you wait several days for your new plant to grow. But it's a great peek into botany, and one that helps develop observation, experimentation, and critical thinking skills.
