In Nothar Park, where Eusebia has lived since immigrating to America as a young woman, a new apartment complex is being built. Eusebia is horrified at the new building and how it's going to affect the lower-income residents of her own building. So she begins plotting ways to stop the development.
Little does Eusebia know that her daughter, Luz, is dating the building's developer. Luz, who still lives at home and just got fired from her law firm, sees the development as a good opportunity for the Dominican population of Nothar Park. And that causes a rift between mother and daughter, with Eusebia trying to hold on to her home and Luz trying to find her own way in the world.
In Neruda on the Park, author Cleyvis Natera tackles difficult topics of immigration, gentrification, mother/daughter relationships, and what "home" really means. The chapters go back and forth between Luz and Eusebia's points of view, giving readers a glimpse of what each woman is going through and has gone through. I think this novel would offer great discussion for a book club!
Neruda on the Park is published by Ballantine Books and is available to purchase now. I received a free copy in exchange for this review.
