Hues of You Book Review

All skin tones are beautiful, and that's what the activities in Hues of You by Lucretia Carter Berry, PhD help children see. This activity book is about "learning about the skin you are in" and helping children "celebrate the incredible range of hues all around them."

As a member of the book's launch team, I received a free copy of the book that I got to share with my daughter. She loved the book's coloring pages and choosing lots of different colors to decorate a tracing of her hand or drawings of her friends and their many hues.

This is a super important book, especially for children of color because it allows them to see themselves represented in a book and discover the wonderful ways in which they were uniquely designed. There's a whole section of the book where kids draw a self-portrait and then list the things they like about their face, as well as what types of clothing they like to wear, what they like to do when they play outside, and what they want to be when they grow up.

With parent participation, especially for younger kids, the book is a learning opportunity that explains what makes skin tones different (how much melanin your skin has, where your ancestors lived, and how much sunlight your skin gets), how our hair follicles get color and texture, and so much more! It's an age-appropriate way to navigate conversations around skin tone, race, and racism.

I think parents will have just as much fun going through this activity book as the kids! It's recommended for ages 7 to 10.

Hues of You is published by Waterbrook and is available to purchase now. I received a free review copy.
