The students at Niveus High have secrets. And the unknown "Aces" is revealing them all via text. The only problem? The only students who appear to be targeted by this mysterious "Aces" are the only two black students in the entire school. Coincidence or is something more sinister going on in Ace of Spades? Devon and Chiamaka end up unlikely allies against a much bigger threat than just the spread of silly rumors.
This is the perfect young adult novel for today's tweens and teens. I don't want to give too much away, but it's definitely a social commentary with inspiration from Gossip Girl and Get Out. You're just as confused as the main characters are when it comes to "Aces" motivation and figuring out who they can trust, both in their school and in their larger world.
Author Faridah Abike-Iyimide brings her own personal experiences and influences into the story, and I can't believe that she's still in college! What a great debut!
This would make a great teen book club read, but even if you're not part of a book club, I encourage you to read this, pass your copy on to someone else, and start a discussion.
Ace of Spades is published by Feiwel and Friends and is on bookstore shelves. I received a free copy as part of a virtual book club.
