If you're a fan of The Babysitters Club or Nancy Drew books, and you also like coming-of-age stories with a little bit of the paranormal, then you'll enjoy Megan Milks' novel Margaret and the Mystery of the Missing Body.
In this novel, teen Margaret mourns the loss of her friends, a group of girls who fancied themselves detectives and even started a club to solve local mysteries. But after middle school, they drifted apart and Margaret now finds herself adrift in the world, wondering where she belongs.
Where she ends up is Briarwood, a treatment center for girls with eating disorders. Can she solve the mystery of Briarwood's ghost? And will doing so help her find her true self?
The novel is divided into two halves, and I really felt that it was like two different books coming together. That wasn't a bad thing, but the first part of the novel is fairly light and humorous, with flashback chapters that are written just like The Babysitters Club novels. However, once Margaret enters Briarwood, those chapters disappear, and the story gets a little more Girl, Interrupted, a little...weirder.
But stick with it! Because the end result is worth it, and the questions that this novel raises are thought-provoking no matter your gender or sexual orientation.
Megan the Mystery of the Missing Body is published by Feminist Press and will be available to purchase September 14, 2021 (tomorrow!). I received a free ARC.
