School, Disrupted Book Review

Emily Greene's School, Disrupted takes a look at how the traditional school system was disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic and ways we (parents, caregivers, teachers, administrators) can change it for the better. Using her family's "homeschool for a year" experience, her expertise in the field of creativity and innovation, and her children's experience going to school via Zoom during 2020, Greene writes about the Seven Wonders of Learning and how we can help today's children achieve all of those things.

This book is about unlearning what you previously thought or experienced regarding school and learning. It challenges the mentality that grades are important, that kids should be taught to the test, and that school has to happen in a school building.

What I liked about this book was the vast resources and ideas for parents throughout the book's chapters and in the appendices. Even if you're not homeschooling your children, even if your kids are going back to school in person, this book offers a lot of great ways to supplement your child's education and spark their curiosity and individuality outside of the classroom.

What saddened me about this book was that it was written in January 2021 when many schools were still doing some form of in-person and virtual learning. Now that we are starting the 2021-2022 school year, it seems that many schools are just going back to what they were doing before: in-person learning inside a school building with tests and grades. Have we really learned anything from the past year? Will there be enough teachers, school administrators, and parents trying to change how children are taught K-12?

I guess we shall see, but as long as parents are reading School, Disrupted, there can at least be a change at home.
