No matter your race or ethnicity, Uju Asika's book Bringing Up Race: How to Raise a Kind Child in a Prejudiced World has great advice for raising kind, happy, and open-minded kids in a world where racism still exists. Using her own experience as a Black mom in London, Asika writes that parents need to start having the discussion about race with their kids at an early age. Did you know that children as young as 3 start "assessing and judging people (and themselves) based on how they look, how you interact with them, and what society tells them?" (p.38)
But how do you even bring it up? This book is chock-full of resources, from books and TV shows to personal anecdotes from the author and other experts, influencers, and fellow parents. And at the end of each chapter, you'll find Talking Points questions to help parents address certain situations, such as what happens if your kid is accused of racist bullying at school or what to do when your kid is playing a sport and hears racist chants or comments from the other team/coaches/spectators.
I have to say, I learned a lot that I didn't know in this book and ended up following a lot of new Instagram accounts and bookmarking pages so I don't forget about podcasts and books that I want to listen to and read.
This book is all about helping kids feel confidant and proud of who they are and where they come from, no matter what they look like.
Bringing Up Race is published by Sourcebooks and is available to purchase now. I received a free review copy.
