Women's History Book List for Children

Reading Partners, a national early literacy nonprofit, reached out to me to share a list of books for children that are perfect to read during Women's History Month - and all year long! Inspire your young girls - and let your young boys see strong women of history - with these great books.

We checked out almost all of these children's books from our local library, so they should be easy for you to find there, too. But don't hesitate to purchase any of these books to add to your home library so you can read them and inspire your kids whenever!

Little Learners: Bold Women in Black History by Vashti Harrison

This book educates and inspires through the true stories of 40 iconic and lesser-known women in Black history.

Gloria's Voice: The Story of Gloria Steinem, Feminist Activist-Leader by Aura Lewis

Gloria Steinem is a household name. Help kids discover this leader in the women's liberation movement, from her childhood to her political awakening and beyond.

Little People, Big Dreams: Frida Kahlo by Isabel Sanchez Vegara

I absolutely love this book series! In this book, stylish and quirky illustrations are contrasted with historical photos to detail the biography of the famed artist.

Malala's Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai

I still haven't read Malala's book for adults, but I'm happy to get started reading this book written by Malala herself all about her childhood dream of making the world a better place for everyone.

Mae Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed

This book tells the story of the first African-American woman in space!

Rad American Women A-Z by Kate Schatz

We actually received this book from a friend when my daughter was a baby, and it's one of our favorites. I love that it's a great way to introduce the letters of the alphabet while also tieing those letters to the names of historic women. For older kids, you can read all the biographical information that accompanies the black-and-white portraits.

Little Melba and Her Big Trombone by Katherine Russell-Brown

This is a biography of a lesser-known woman, at least to me. Melba Doretta Liston grew up to become a famed trombone player and arranger, creating songs for the jazz greats of the 20th Century: Randy Weston, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, and Quincy Jones.

The World is Not a Rectangle: A Portrait of Architect Zaha Hadid by Jeanette Winter

This is the story of how a Muslim woman knocked down obstacles to achieve her goal of designing buildings all over the world.

Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo by Helaine Becker

We all know about Katherine Johnson from the book and movie Hidden Figures. This makes the story more palatable for younger kids.

Who Says Women Can't Be Doctors?: The Story of Elizabeth Blackwell by Tanya Lee Stone

I just read a biography of Elizabeth Blackwell and her sister not that long ago, and I'm so excited to see that there's a children's book that also tells the story so I can share it with my 5-year-old!

Rise!: From Cage Bird to Poet of the People, Maya Angelou by Bethany Hegedus

This book could be a great companion to the new Barbie Inspiring Women Series Maya Angelou doll. Combine them both for a fun gift!
