Taste Test: Gluten-Free Oreos vs. Regular Oreos

If you have Celiac disease and are eating gluten-free, then you've probably heard about the new gluten-free Oreos that launched this year! We finally got our hands on a package of them!

Lucky for me, I don't have Celiac disease AND Oreos do not contain milk, so I was able to eat both of them to compare how they taste to the regular Oreos.

Controversy Surrounding Gluten-Free Oreos

Now, we do need to address some of the issues people have with these gluten-free Oreo cookies. First off, Trader Joe's has been making its own version of a gluten-free sandwich cookie for years now. (And they are AMAZING.) So has Glutino. It's not like this is something that people with Celiac disease have been super deprived of.

Second, it hasn't yet been confirmed if they are using sorted oats or purity protocol oats. (Oats are generally cross-contaminated because they are grown in the same fields as wheat, barley, and rye.)  Many in the Celiac community aren't sure if gluten-free Oreos are actually safe for those with Celiac disease despite having a "certified gluten-free" label.

My husband eats the gluten-free Cheerios (which has its own oat controversy), but he's never had a reaction to them. So we are not too concerned about trying the gluten-free Oreos. But, obviously, you know your body best.

As with any product, make sure you read the ingredients label.

Slight Difference in the Look

If you, like us, buy both the regular and gluten-free ones, how will you tell them apart? Very easy. The gluten-free Oreos have the words "gluten free" printed around the signature Oreo logo.

Not Much Difference in Taste

Usually the gluten-free version of a food is smaller or lacks in some way as compared to the regular foods. Not so in the case of the gluten-free Oreo. These cookies are the same size, have the same amount of cream in the middle, and taste pretty much the same. You might be able to notice a slight difference in the taste, but I didn't think it was too significant.

So, overall, I liked the gluten-free Oreos! I'm probably more excited about them than my husband because I absolutely LOVE Oreo cookies. But at least now we can both have some for dessert, or I can make some cookies 'n' cream desserts that will be okay for him to eat.

If you really want gluten-free sandwich cookies but you don't live near a Trader Joe's or your grocery store doesn't carry the Glutino sandwich cookies, then the gluten-free Oreos (which are at Walmart and my local ShopRite) will be a convenient option.

Have you tried them yet? What did you think?
