It snowed where I live before we even had the first day of winter. So at my house, we started reading picture books about winter in December.
But if you're planning a winter-themed school lesson this month (at home or in the classroom) or just want some fun winter books for kids, check out my list of our favorite children's books about winter.
All Around Bustletown: Winter by Rotraut Susanne Berner
This is part of a whole series of books that I reviewed a few months ago. The books take you through all four seasons in the busy town of Bustletown. We love discovering new things on each page every time we read through the books.
Snow by Uri Shulevitz
This is a great book about a boy who sees one snowflake fall, then two, and then three. All the adults say there won't be any snow, but the boy keeps hoping, and sure enough, the snow blankets the town all in white!
One Snowy Night by Nick Butterworth
This is a silly story about Percy the Park Keeper who takes in all the animals to keep them warm. Will there be enough room in Percy's bed for everybody?
The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett
This picture book puts a twist on the classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears story. Set in the Arctic and inspired by a trip the author and her husband took to Nunavut Territory in northern Canada, the book features Brett's signature artwork and is sure to be one of the best winter stories in your collection.
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen
Even if you've never gone owling as the father and daughter do in this book, you'll enjoy the quietness of the snow-covered forest and the excitement of the little girl as she searches for her own nighttime owl sighting.
Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright
All of these books would be good winter books for Kindergarten and other early elementary grades, whether you're a teacher in the classroom or a parent homeschooling. What are some of your family's favorite books about winter?
