Authors I'd Like to Be Friends With

Today I'd thought I'd do something a little fun - talk about the authors who I want to be friends with in real life! Don't you sometimes read someone's work and think, "Man, I wish we could hang out!" I know I do. And these are those authors!

You can find out more in this video on my YouTube channel!

Shannon Olson, author of Welcome to My Planet and Children of God Go Bowling
Many years ago, I read Olson's book Children of God Go Bowling and LOVED it. There was something about the way she wrote about her fictitious self and the things that book Shannon experienced that was so similar to the way I felt and things that I had experienced. I don't know much about this author outside of the two books I've read, but I'd love to track her down and find out more.

Melanie Dale, author of Women Are Scary
Dale wrote a book all about how hard it is to make female friendships as adults. I loved this book, and it's been on my read-again list for far too long. Hey, Melanie, making friends doesn't have to be awkward! You + me + our kids at the playground or something = friends!!

Nadia Bolz-Weber, author of Accidental Saints
This woman is the type of person I would want as the pastor of my church. She doesn't claim to be holier than thou. She owns up to her quirks and imperfections. She curses, for chrissakes! She's covered in tattoos! But she also runs a church that is open to all, an admirable way to be a Christian in a world where so many Christians turn people away and focus on what God hates instead of what God loves.

Kimberly Rae Miller, author of Beautiful Bodies
I was blown away by Miller's memoir of body issues and dieting because so much of it hit home for me. And not even the dieting from an early age and trouble losing weight. Miller and I are the same age. We were both pregnant with our first kids at the same time. We both had thyroid issues during our pregnancies. (I've written about mine here.) And as I'm reading this book, I'm like, "Oh my gosh! Miller is like my twin or something!" If I ever have the opportunity, I'd love to meet up with her in NYC for coffee and a chat.

Lindy West, author of Shrill
West's latest book The Witches Are Coming is still on my to-read list, but in true ME fashion, it always takes me too long to actually get and finish a book. That was the case with my autographed copy of Shrill. Took me like a year to finally read it! And it was amazing! Like having a conversation with some of my best friends. I loved West's writing style and hearing about her experiences with weight, comedy, and online haters.

Lisa-Jo Baker, author of The Middle Matters
I was so honored to be selected as part of The Middle Matters street team before the book came out. It was so good, especially if you are in that "middle" season of life. I know some people who attended MOMCon last year and they got to meet Baker! So jealous! I'd love to hear her speak, and maybe even hang out at an after-party or something. You know, a cool mom after-party!

Tina Fey, author of Bossypants
Bossypants is one of my all-time favorite books. It's just as funny as Fey is in real life, and the chapter for her daughters is just priceless! I could be confusing Fey with her 30 Rock character Liz Lemon because Liz and I had way too many random things in common. It was like Fey had spied on my life! But I'll let it slide. Maybe it's because I watched and enjoyed Wine Country on Netflix, but I can totally see me and Fey having a girls' weekend.
