I received an autographed review copy of the steampunk young adult novel The Lost Imperials Book 2 Prodigal and Book 3 Riven by Tyler H. Jolley and Sherry D. Ficklin way back at BookExpo 2017 or something. It's pretty cool because Book 2 is on one side of the book, and then you flip it over and read Book 3.
So my review of Book 2 first: Reading this, for me, was like playing catch-up. I didn't read the first book in the series, so I needed to be filled in on what had happened and who all these people were. Thankfully, the characters did a pretty good job of reminding readers of the past events. And I could pretty well surmise what was going on. The main character, Stein, is part of a group of people who can time travel. They're called Rifters. And their abilities have something to do with Nikola Tesla. Well, Stein's abilities have everything to do with Tesla because he's her dad. So this story focuses on Stein trying to figure out more about her past and teaming up with her friend Ember to get Tesla to help. This book ends on a cliffhanger, but flipping over to Book 3 doesn't immediately keep the story going.
Instead, Book 3 takes you through the same sequence of events from Book 2 only through the point of view of Ethan, Ember's boyfriend. Ethan's memories are coming back to him, and if he doesn't deal with them, his ability to rift is going to go all haywire. It took me a little while to get into this book, but at a certain point toward the end, there are some major plot twists. And then THIS book leaves you hanging with its twist ending.
Where is Book 4? I was having trouble finding information on it, and I don't know if it has come out or if it's still in the works or WHAT. But I definitely want to know what happens next.
The Lost Imperials Book 2 Prodigal and Book 3 Riven is published by Clean Teen Publishing and is available now. I received a free review copy at BookExpo.
