DIY Craft Activities for Kids from Tierra Encantada

School's out all across the country, and parents are probably wondering how to keep kids busy this summer, especially with summer camps and neighborhood pools being closed because of COVID-19.

The Minnesota-based (and expanding) daycare and preschool Tierra Encantada, the leader in Spanish immersion early education, was kind enough to share some at-home DIY activities that kids of all ages can make and enjoy.

And best of all, you probably already have the supplies you need at home!

Let's take a look at the activities:

DIY Can Drums

Materials Needed:
- Tin can, cardboard, or plastic container
- Balloon
- Rubber band
- Drumsticks (popsicle sticks, chopsticks)
- Rice/Beans/Popcorn filler (optional)
- Stickers or markers to decorate (optional)

Directions:
1. Clean out the canister, making sure there are no rough edges if using a metal can.
2. Cut the bottom off of a balloon (the part you blow into) and pull the remaining part of the balloon over the can so it fits "tight as a drum".
3. Secure the balloon with a rubber band.
4. Use this as a hand drum or use popsicle sticks or chopsticks as drumsticks.
5. You can also fill your drum with fillers, such as rice, beans, or popcorn kernels, and use it as a shaker.

DIY Sensory Shakers

Materials Needed:
- Clean and empty clear plastic bottle with a top
- Filler items (rice, water, toothpicks, cereal, dried beans, paper clips, beads, etc.)
- Curling ribbon or cloth ribbon (optional to create fun decorative top)
- Scissors or a small Philips screwdriver (optional to create fun decorative top)
- Adhesive for ribbon (hot glue gun, duct tape, etc. - optional)

Directions:
1. Empty and clean a water bottle; let dry.
2. Pour items into the water bottle.
3. Punch a small hole into the cap of the water bottle with a small screwdriver or with scissors.
4. If you have hot glue, put some glue around the top of the water bottle and replace the cap. This will help keep your child from opening it and spilling out the contents.
*Please note: it is important to supervise your child while using this toy to ensure their safety and avoid spills.

DIY Flower Stamp Craft

Materials Needed:
- Toilet paper roll
- Paper
- Scissors
- Paint
- Paintbrush

Directions:
1. Cut one-inch slits around one end of the toilet paper roll. Simple cuts will do or you can get creative and cut more elaborate shapes.
2. After cutting, fan out cuts so the "petals" can be stamped flat.
3. Paint the "petals" or dip the entire roll into paint and stamp the paper.

DIY Paper Plate Strummie

Materials Needed:
- Sturdy paper plate (boxes or baking pans can be used, as well)
- Several rubber bands
- Markers, paint, and stickers for decorating (optional)

Directions:
1. Decorate your plate.
2. Help your child string the rubber bands across the paper plate.
3. Pluck or strum the strings and compose your own songs, or cover some of your favorite tunes.

Have fun getting creative at home this summer! And be sure to see if there is a Tierra Encantada Spanish Immersion Daycare and Preschool near you!
