Best Book Club Picks from BookExpo

One of my favorite things about BookExpo is the Reading Guides Book Club Speed Dating event at which publisher representatives try to sell you on choosing their book for your book club in speedy pitches.

This year, the event was held online, allowing even more publishers to participate, so I got to hear about A LOT of new books in two hours. Here are some of the favorites that I can't wait to read:

Private Means by Cree LeFavour
In this domestic novel, empty nesters spend a summer dealing with their marriage, money, loss, and the heat. The book comes out on August 11, 2020, and I have a e-ARC to review, so stay tuned for that review to come out soon!

Midnight Train to Prague by Carol Windley
This book doesn't come out until November, but I'll keep you posted on my thoughts as soon as I read my e-ARC and review it. Basically, a girl and her mom are riding on a train that gets stalled, and events occur that shape the girl's future.

Seven by Farzana Doctor
In this memoir, the author travels to India to research her great-great-grandfather. However, she uncovers more than she imagined. This book comes out in September, and I received an e-ARC to review.

The Last Story of Mina Lee by Nancy Jooyoun Kim
This murder mystery deals with a mother-daughter relationship and being an undocumented immigrant. It hits shelves on September 1, 2020.

Confessions on the 7:45 by Lisa Unger
Unger is one of my favorite authors, so I'm very excited for her new thriller coming out on October 6, 2020.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Set in 1950s Mexico, the story's main character, Noemi, receives a letter from her cousin asking for help. When Noemi travels to visit her cousin and her cousin's mysterious husband, things are not what they seem. This book comes out really soon - June 30, 2020!

The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult
I'm not a big Jodi Picoult reader, but the premise of this book intrigued me. Basically, what does a live well lived look like? This comes out on September 22, 2020.

The Book of Atlantis Black by Betsy Bonner
This book is based on the true story of a woman searching for her missing sister. Was she murdered or is something else going on? The book comes out on August 4, 2020.

Bright and Dangerous Objects by Annelise Mackintosh
This book, about a woman scientist chosen for the Mars mission, tackles how ambition competes with motherhood. It comes out on October 6, 2020.

The Last Flight by Julie Clark
I have an e-ARC of this book, too, and I'm excited to read it. What happens when two women switch plane tickets, but one woman's plane goes down and kills her? It comes out this month!

Sanctuary by V.V. James
Take The Crucible, Practical Magic, Big Little Lies, and The Craft, and you've apparently got this book about a town where witches help people, but when a woman's son is accidentally killed, can witchcraft bring back her son? This book will be out in paperback in September.

What You Could Have Won by Rachel Genn
The author said she wrote this book because she "didn't want Amy Winehouse to be dead." The main character is a talented rock star whose talents are swallowed up by the men around her. It comes out November 3, 2020.

The High-Rise Diver by Julia von Lucadou
You'll have to wait until March 2021 for this title, but I think it will be worth the wait. It takes place in a dystopian world where performance is everything.

When We Were Young and Brave by Hazel Gaynor
I've read Hazel Gaynor before (The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter) and enjoyed her fictional take on historical events. In this book, missionaries are sent to China during World War II and end up being imprisoned in internment camps. I like that this is a different perspective on the war.

Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots
This novel takes a look at the superhero story from the point of view of a supervillain's henchman - or assistant. It's a character-driven underdog story, and it comes out on September 22, 2020.

The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle
This is a thriller about identical twin sisters. What happens when one assumes the other's identity? The book comes out on October 20, 2020.

One Year of Ugly by Caroline McKenzie
At first, I wasn't sure about this one, but it sounded like a good blend of romance, comedy, and crazy situations. It's also been optioned by Netflix, so you might want to read this one before the adaptation. I received a free e-ARC, so I'll try to have a review up before the book comes out on July 7, 2020.

Florence Adler Swims Forever by Rachel Beanland
I just received an e-ARC of this book, so I'll try and get a review posted before the book's July 7 release date. I liked the sound of this one because it's set in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the 1930s, and it deals with a family tragedy that everyone in the family has to pretend didn't happen in order to protect a family elder.

The Taste of Sugar by Marisel Vera
This book comes out on June 16. It's historical fiction about a Puerto Rican family on the eve of the Spanish-American war.

The House on Fripp Island by Rebecca Kaufman
I think I have an e-ARC of this book, so stick around for my review. This book is already out, so don't feel like you have to wait for me! It takes a look at rich versus not rich as two families vacation together. The moms use to be friends as kids, but things are different now as adults.

The Lying Life of Adults by Elena Ferrante
Giovanna is told by her father that she's ugly. But is she really? Find out when this book is released on September 1, 2020.

A Small Crowd of Strangers by Joanna Rose
A librarian from New Jersey marries the wrong man and ends up in Minnesota. Will she be able to get away from her husband who wants things that she doesn't? Or will her bad choice only continue to complicate her life?

All the Acorns on the Forest Floor by Kim Hooper
The short stories in this collection all help to tell a larger story about motherhood, spouses, and the lengths we go for the people we love. It comes out September 15, 2020.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini
Paolini most notably wrote Eragon (which I haven't read but is supposed to be good), so fans of that book will be pleased to know that he has a new one out on September 15, 2020.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab
This book was getting so much buzz during the show week! Addie makes a deal with the devil to live forever, but no one will remember her. I think everyone entered the giveaway for this book. But for those of us who didn't win, the book comes out on October 6, 2020.

The Finisher by Peter Lovesey
This is Lovesey's 19th book in the Peter Diamond series and his 50th year of crime writing. In this new one, Diamond is on the scene when a runner doesn't cross the finish line. The book comes out on August 4, 2020.
