House of Gold - Book Review

I'm so upset with myself that it took me this long to read Natasha Solomons' House of Gold. I picked up an ARC at last year's BookCon with the promise that the book was for fans of Downton Abbey. The novel did not disappoint.

Set in the early 1900s, the book follows the trials and triumphs of the Goldbaum family, a rich banking family with bank houses all over Europe. The family also happens to be Jewish. They've kept their family pure thanks to cousins marrying cousins. But the new generation of Goldbaums want different things - jobs, partners, etc. Loyalty to family is everything, but the family also has to weigh family obligations with loyalty to religion and loyalty to country as Russia issues porgroms against Jews and World War 1 breaks out.

I really enjoyed reading the saga of the Goldbaums, spanning several years, births, deaths, and war. This was a book that I couldn't put down! (Literally, I stood making dinner while reading this book at the same time.) I would highly recommend this book.

House of Gold is published by G.P. Putnam's Sons and is on bookstore shelves now. I received a free ARC at BookCon.
