Top 6 Halloween Books for Kids

One of the most frequent places my daughter and I visit (aside from the grocery store) is the library. They have little computers with educational content and games on it for the kids to play, plus a divided holiday book section where you can find children's books for Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and, of course, Halloween!

So I thought I'd share what some of our favorite Halloween books are right now!

The 12 Days of Halloween by Jenna Lettice and Colleen Madden
If you don't mind singing instead of reading, then this is the book for you. It's basically the "12 Days of Christmas" but with a Halloween rewrite. We've actually checked out this book twice and not even around Halloween!

Come with Me on Halloween by Linda Hoffman Kimball
What I like about this book is the easy rhyme and the fun little twist at the end. The frightened trick-or-treater isn't the kid - it's Dad! Some of the pages might be a little scary for younger kids, but my daughter was okay with reading this multiple times.

Curious George Goes to a Costume Party by Margret Rey
I tend to not be a huge Curious George fan. I find that in the original books, Curious George was just annoyingly disobedient instead of curious and he seemed to get away with stuff because he was a cute monkey. Just me? But the newer books I can handle, like this Halloween-themed book. In it, George dresses up for a costume party, but he can't see himself in the mirror. Typical silliness ensues as George becomes curious, but all ends well.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams and Megan Lloyd
This book has definitely become one of my daughter's favorites. I think we need to buy it. I remember reading this book when I was a kid. It's a classic, at least to me. And all the sounds the reader makes offer nice repetition for young kids.

Two Little Witches by Harriet Ziefert and Simms Taback
My in-laws got this book for my daughter's first Halloween, but she didn't really appreciate it until she was 2. There's counting, very easy counting, and even an introduction to subtraction at the end. Plus, there are stickers inside! (But they won't stay inside for long - most of them will end up stuck all over the book.)

EEK! Halloween by Sandra Boynton
This board book was one of my mom's favorites, and she gave it to my daughter on her first Halloween. If you need a Halloween book for the littlest trick-or-treater, this silly story about chickens who don't understand why an elephant is dressed as a mouse is a must-have Halloween read.

And those are our favorites! As you can see from the title photo for this post, there are other Halloween books on our bookshelf, but the six listed here are definitely my daughter's favorites right now.

What books do you and your kids like to read around Halloween? I'll need recommendations for next year.
