Stranger Things: Runaway Max - Book Review

Alright, let me be honest. I am so behind on this whole Stranger Things phenomenon. My husband and I started and finished watching season 1 last month, and now we're ALMOST done with season 2. So that's where I stood when I started reading my free review copy of Brenna Yovanoff's young adult novel Stranger Things: Runaway Max.

The book is billed as a prequel, but unless you've seen all of season 2, this book is a spoiler. Most of the events in the book take place during season 2 with a few flashbacks sprinkled throughout in order to give us a glimpse of who Max is and where she came from. I liked getting the extra background info on the character since she's kind of just there in the show, and I'm wondering if this book was thought about ahead of time. Like, "We want to introduce this new character, but we don't really have time to go into her history, so we'll just have things be kind of mysterious and weird in the show and then people can read this book for more."

Maybe.

Or maybe not. However this book came to be, I think it's a nice way to help fans get to know the new season 2 character. The book doesn't cover season 2 verbatim, which is kind of nice, because it's all told through the perspective of Max, and she's not in every scene of the show, nor does her character even know what's going on half the time. So if you want sort of a refresher before watching season 3, you could also do that by reading this book.

What I also like about this is that it's geared toward kids ages 12 and up, so it's a great way to entice young Stranger Things fans to read!

Stranger Things: Runaway Max is published by Random House Books for Young Readers and is on bookstore shelves now. I received a free review copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
