When Faith Fails - Book Review

Why did I chose Dominic Done's When Faith Fails to review for free from the BookLook Bloggers program? I often find myself questioning elements of faith. I think that all Christians have highs and lows on our faith journeys. But what should we do when faced with doubt? That's what this book aims to address.

It's divided into three sections. The first takes a look at the origins of doubt. Doubt is not a new thing among Christians. There have been plenty of doubters in the Bible. (And as you'll see in part 3, God seeks them out and uses them, even in their doubt, to carry out his good purpose.) In this first section, Done delves into his own experience with doubt as a graduate student at Oxford. Even a pastor and religious author can question God.

And the second part of the book talks about what some of those questions might be: is the Bible trustworthy, how do we reconcile science with religion, why do bad things happen, and why is God silent. Done attempts to provide answers to these common questions and definitely offers a fresh perspective on the topics. (For instance, I have always believed that bad things happen because of human free will, but as Done writes, how does that account for "the tragedy of birth defects or natural disasters?" p. 116)

The last part offers resources to help doubters move beyond their doubt. First, you have to embrace it. Wrestle God on the mat like Jacob did in the Bible. And in some cases, you have to let doubt go. But always know that asking questions keeps us learning about God and draws us closer to him. We are seeking him, but he actually sought us first.
