How to Maximize Your Time at Disney

The saying “So much to do, so little time” perfectly describes Walt Disney World (WDW) and Disneyland. With than 100 WDW attractions (rides, shows, exhibits) across four different parks (not including its two water parks) and 52 attractions across Disneyland’s two parks, there’s a lot to do and see when you’re there.

You could just show up at a park and wing it, but if you want to ensure you have the time to ride your favorite rides, meet your favorite characters, and eat your favorite snacks, all while avoiding long lines, you need to have a plan. Here are a few tips to make the most of your time at Disney.

Lightning Lane

For an additional cost, you can skip the standby lines. This is called Lightning Lane, and many attractions at Disney parks have a Lightning Lane entrance.

A Lightning Lane Multi-Pass allows you to skip the line for a variety of WDW and Disneyland attractions. For instance, at WDW’s Magic Kingdom, there are 17 Lightning Lane attractions, including Space Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Haunted Mansion, and Pirates of the Caribbean. You can access one Lightning Lane entry per attraction per day. Once you use one Lightning Lane, you can book your next one through the My Disney Experience app if you’re at WDW or the Disneyland app if you’re at Disneyland. Once booked, you’ll be given a set time to enter the attraction. The price of a Lightning Lane Multi-Pass varies depending on the day and park.

Of course, a few attractions are not included in the Lightning Lane Multi-Pass. TRON Lightcycle/Run, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train are a few of the Disney attractions that do have a Lightning Lane entrance, but to use them, you’ll need to purchase a Lightning Lane Single Pass for each one.

Rope Drop

If you don’t want to pay extra for Lightning Lane Multi-Pass or the Lightning Lane Single Passes, there is another option: rope dropping. This works best if you’re staying at a Disney resort because you’ll get into the parks 30 minutes earlier than non-resort guests, giving you extra time to ride a must-do attraction before everybody else gets there.

As a resort guest, you’ll want to arrive at your park of choice before early entry starts. So, if early entry is at 8:30 a.m., maybe you get there by 7:45 a.m. Once inside the park, hustle over to your attraction of choice. My family recently did this for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in EPCOT and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in Magic Kingdom, and once we were in line, our wait time was between 10 and 20 minutes. Later in the day, these same attractions will have posted wait times between 56 to 120 minutes.

Touring Plans

Whether you decide to do Lightning Lane or not, another option to help you plan your day is the planning software from Touring Plans (touringplans.com). A subscription costs $24.97 a year and helps you plan when to visit, what park to visit, and how to wait less in line. You can use Touring Plans for WDW, Disneyland, and Disney Cruises (and also Universal Studios Florida). My family uses Touring Plans every time we visit a Disney park, and it’s such a helpful way to plan out our entire day, from the attractions we really want to experience to afternoon breaks back at the resort and time for eating.

There’s a lot to plan for when you visit a Disney park. Whether your family is thinking of visiting for the first time or fourth time, I would love to help make the magic happen for you. As a travel agent specializing in Disney, I can help you plan and book your WDW, Disneyland, Disney’s Aulani, Disney Cruise Line, and Adventures by Disney vacation - at no extra cost to you!
