The Snow Hare Book Review

For a book that wasn't really doing much for me in the beginning, I sure got emotional while finishing Paula Lichtarowicz's The Snow Hare. Here is a story about love and sacrifice, about a woman who knows what she wants out of life, but continues to be surprised and saddened by life's curveballs.

On her deathbed, Lena goes in and out of consciousness, reminiscing about her childhood in Poland and her dream of becoming a doctor. Her memories take her through an unwanted marriage, motherhood, and expulsion from the only home she's known. She remembers being taken to a work camp in Siberia and finding love even as her world crumbles around her.

If you're a mother, there are parts of this novel that will be hard to read as you imagine how you would react to some of Lena's situations. Mothers will do everything in their power to protect their children, am I right? And just when you think you know how the story will end, much like the way Lena's life turned out, you get something a little unexpected.

Oh, how I sobbed at the end of this book!

I think this would be great for book club discussion!

The Snow Hare is published by Little, Brown and Company and will be available to purchase tomorrow, January 31, 2023. I received a free review copy.
