The Mommy Life Book Review

There's an old saying I learned from my high school Western Civilizations teacher: It's funny because it's true. Thus, you will find yourself simultaneously laughing and crying while flipping through the illustrations of Gina McMillen's book The Mommy Life. Though her mom comics aim to find the humor in mommyhood, they also point out how stressful life with littles can be and prove that you are not alone.

When artist McMillen decided to become a stay-at-home mom, she also decided to use her artistic talent to share funny comics and drawings about mom life on social media. This book compiles 160 new drawings that take you through the early days of new motherhood, food wars, play dates, daily life, and me time.

I loved the "new mom search history" with the option of  "I'm feeling tired" in place of Google's "I'm feeling lucky". In several places throughout the book, the mom is weighed down by something, from laundry to a 1-ton weight of "responsibilities". I feel that! Or how heavy an 8-pound baby becomes when you try to carry him in the infant car seat carrier. I mean, it's convenient to take in and out of the car, but...

Because this is a book of illustrations, it doesn't require a lot of your time. You can sneak in a few pages during a (hopefully solo) bathroom break, keep it handy to flip through during your baby's feeding, or keep it out on your nightstand to read a few pages before you go to bed.

Mother's Day is coming up soon, so if you need a fun gift for an expecting mom or a new mom, then I'd recommend this book!

The Mommy Life is published by Adams Media and is available to purchase now. I received a free review copy.
