Freaks Book Review

Jamie, Micah, Christian, and Gabby live in small-town America, the kind of place where they're incessantly bullied by three of their classmates and ignored by the rest. And all because there's something different about the four of them. But when a LARP adventure goes awry, there's something really different about this group of geeks: now they have superpowers. And they've got to learn how to use these new powers in order to defeat whatever evil they've accidentally unleashed in the world.

Some of the characters want to use their powers to get back at their tormentors, while others know that "with great power comes great responsibility". I liked the back and forth between wanting to use their powers to defend themselves against their school bullies but knowing that tormenting their tormentors unprovoked only makes them as bad as the bullies. I think most kids wish they had some sort of superpower, so it's interesting to see how actually getting powers affects these kids' lives and friendships. You're not sure if these kids are going to be the good guys or if their newfound abilities will turn them into the bad guys.

You're also not sure if the four of them will be able to harness their powers to defeat the super creepy (and a little violent) bad guy from another dimension who keeps eating people.

This is apparently the first book in a new young adult series, with the sequel to be published in August 2022.
