From Barefoot to Stilettos: Finding My Yes Book Review

Who is Marie Pizano and why should you want to read a book about her life? That's the question readers might be asking themselves as they pick up From Barefoot to Stilettos: Finding My Yes, especially if they've never read Pizano's first book, confusedly titled From Barefoot to Stilettos: It's Not For Sissies

I mistakenly thought Finding My Yes was simply a re-release with an updated title. Instead, it's a sequel, and not having read the first book, I was very confused when I started this one. It's simply a series of short chapters all about the more recent challenges Pizano has had to overcome: her ex-husband, disciplining her children, business troubles, and potential infidelity.

This being my first introduction to Pizano, I found myself wanting to know more specifics, especially about her company. I think she only mentioned the name of it one time in this book! So if you're starting with this book, maybe hold off until you read the first one or at least do a quick Google search of her name.

There were parts of the book that I liked, especially the chapter on how she refound her faith because I think her experience is so similar to that of others, and she has a really refreshing outlook on what it means to be spiritual. Other parts of the book (like how the first chapter randomly starts off talking about this married guy she likes but doesn't have an affair with or how she namedrops Morgan Freeman A LOT) could have been better organized or edited. I felt like the theme of "Finding My Yes" wasn't very clear throughout the book, and perhaps each chapter should have had a more specific focus: "Finding My Yes ... in Parenting" or "Finding My Yes ... in Business". Then some of the stories about those themes that are spread out throughout the book could have been combined under one larger section. (This might also have prevented Pizano from repeating stories.)

But overall, it sounds like Pizano has lived an interesting life. (Apparently, she writes in her first book about a motorcycle accident that she survived as a teenager.) She's certainly a strong woman, a female business owner, and a mother who is not afraid to tell it like it is to her family and business associates. If you're a woman looking to feel empowered by a fellow female, then you might find what you're looking for (including your own YES) by reading this book.
