The Woman Code Book Review

Even if you read The Woman Code back in 2014 when it was first published, you'll want to read it again in the updated 2021 paperback. Sophia A. Nelson's re-released book offers "20 powerful keys to unlock your life", including your COVID-impacted life.

When I first heard about this book, I thought it would be a perfect book club pick for a toy industry women's group that I'm part of. But the book's focus isn't just on a woman's professional life. There are five types of codes covered in this book: personal, emotional, spiritual, professional, and relational. A study guide at the back of the book helps you go deeper and unlock your own unique codes, while giving your book club discussion questions should you choose to read this book as part of a group.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The chapters are fairly short, but they give you a lot to think about. I like how all the codes relate to each other, meaning you'll need to understand how to live one code in order to successfully live out another. And it all starts from knowing your value. I think that's the hardest concept for women today to grasp. What are we worth? What is our work worth? What is our time worth? And how can we leverage that throughout all aspects of our life?

There was only one chapter of the book that I took issue with: Code 8 - Age Gracefully. Men don't have to "age gracefully", so I take issue with that wording. Yes, it's important for us (men and women) to accept that getting older is inevitable. Exercise and a healthy diet are key for overall health, no matter your age. But don't tell me to use products that reduce wrinkles or not to go gray. Those two things are called "distinguished" on men, but how dare women show their age! That's not a code I - or many women these days - live by.

The Woman Code is published by Health Communications, Inc. It is available to purchase now. I received a free review copy.
