Pinecone Painting for Kids

Anyone else doing a January "outside every day" challenge? It may be winter, but if the weather isn't too cold, get outside for a nature walk with your kids and collect a variety of pinecones - or purchase craft pinecones from the store - to do this super easy pinecone painting activity for kids.

And for more painting ideas for kids, be sure to check out my 10 Painting Ideas for Kids post on the Zulily blog.

I first heard about this painting activity from No Time for Flashcards, which has been a great resource for me during COVID stay-at-home learning.

So here's what I did:

After gathering a handful of pinecones, we went home and placed a sheet of white construction paper inside an old Koala Crate box. Any cardboard box or plastic bin will work for this, as long as it can hold the size of paper you want.

Then I dolloped a bit of poster paint onto the paper. To keep things feeling like fall, we used red, yellow, and orange.

Place a pinecone or two inside the box, and tilt the box back and forth and all around so that the pinecones roll through the paint.

And that's it! That's all it takes to create some abstract art with your kids. Let the paper dry, and then hang your pinecone-painted creations on the fridge for the family to enjoy.

I recommend wearing play clothes or an apron and covering your work surface in case of paint splatters.

What fun painting crafts do you like to make with your kids?
