Community Helpers Kid School Theme Books

This week we've been doing a Community Helpers theme at our "kid school". I managed to compile a list of books that were all available at our local library. Check out the list below for what we're reading, and watch my book video for more details.

The Berenstain Bears: On the Job by Stan and Jan Berenstain
Just a cute picture book featuring classic characters that introduces kids to a variety of different jobs. (I was pretty impressed that not only was computer programmer a job in 1987, but the Berenstains showed a female bear in the position!)

Biscuit Visits the Doctor by Alyssa Capucilli
After reading about Biscuit's doctor/vet visit, we did some doctor roleplaying with our pretend doctor's sets and some free printable patient charts that I found through Pinterest.

Vera Goes to the Dentist by Vera Rosenberry
Vera may have been afraid to visit the dentist in this picture book, but my kiddo is not! I think the dental practice we go to is much more kid-friendly than the one in this book!

Pete the Cat: Firefighter Pete by James Dean
Great book about Pete visiting a firehouse on a school trip. He even gets to help put out a fire! Would have been fun to pair this book with our town's annual Touch a Truck event, where kids get to sit inside firetrucks, police cruisers, ambulances, school buses, etc. But the event was cancelled because of COVID-19. Oh well.

Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann
Rathmann's Good Night, Gorilla is a favorite at our house, but unlike that book, Officer Buckle and Gloria actually has words! It's a cute story about a police dog pairing up with a police officer to help teach safety tips to kids.

Richard Scarry's Busiest People Ever by Richard Scarry
This book features several different stories about Huckle and Lowly Worm, and the people they meet around town, from crossing guards to boat captains and TV stars! Another great book to introduce kids to different jobs and get kids thinking about what they want to be when they grow up.

So those are this week's books. What are some of your favorite "community helpers" books? Share in the comments! And I'll try to post more children's books for various kid school themes as we go along.
