Anxious People - Book Review

Is there a Fredrik Backman book that won't make me cry? If his latest, Anxious People, doesn't make you weep, then you're just heartless. That or you've never lost a loved one.

The premise is that a bank robber, who actually didn't rob a bank, crashes an apartment viewing in an escape attempt from the police. In doing so, the bank robber takes hostages. The story is told through police interviews with the rescued hostages, as well as conversations the hostages have with each other and third-person narration from inside the apartment.

I loved the message of not judging others because you never really know what's going on in their lives or what happened to them in the past that brought them to where they are today. I think that message of compassion and empathy is one that is sorely needed in today's selfish society.

I also really loved how the author connected all the characters. It just goes to show that we all have an effect on each other, whether we know it or not.

Anxious People is published by Atria Books and is on bookstore shelves TODAY. I received a free e-ARC in exchange for my review.
