A Cry from the Far Middle - Book Review

I don't know if P.J. O'Rourke is just a grumpy old man or if I'm just a delicate liberal snowflake. Maybe a bit of both. At least if there's anything we can agree on, it's that Ayn Rand is the worst.

No, we agree on more things that I thought we would when I started reading A Cry from the Far Middle: Dispatches from a Divided Land. Like that we both dislike Donald Trump and there needs to be a better candidate on both sides and the two-party system is flawed because only one side can win.

O'Rourke likes to take jabs at just about everyone and everything, but perhaps he targets most of his "jokes" at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. With all the online and in-person harassment she already gets, can't we just leave her alone for a second?

Once I got past the generalization that all Coasties are oblivious and obnoxious, and only Heartlanders know what real living is, I found the book humorous, pointing out the flaws in our political system. I really enjoyed the ideal State of the Union speech at the end of the book.

If you're trying to take the edge off this election season and you want to see things from a different perspective, then you'll enjoy reading this book of essays.

A Cry from the Far Middle is published by Atlantic Monthly Press and is on bookstore shelves today. I received a free e-ARC for my review.
