I got a free ebook for being a Simon & Schuster newsletter subscriber, so I chose The Grouchy Historian out of the six options because it was written by Ed Asner, actor from The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Up.
I didn't know much about Asner personally, but I did know him well from his acting gigs. He's a Democrat, and he's sick and tired of Republicans twisting the Constitution and the words of the Framers and Founding Fathers to fit their agenda. So this book gives historical facts to show just who the rich white men were who wrote the Constitution and what they were thinking when they wrote it.
Spoiler alert: it was not religion.
At times I thought there were some cheap shots at Republicans. Asner doesn't shy away from saying what he feels, and because of that, I hope people take this book seriously. I'm not sure who the main demographic will be for this book - people who also side with Asner and are happy to read something that confirms their beliefs? Or old people who are fans of Asner and will read this because his picture is on the cover, and then they'll change their minds about supporting Trump?
I liked the historical context, but I want my discourse to be civil and not devolve into name-calling.
The Grouchy Historian is published by Simon & Schuster and is on bookstore shelves now. I received a free ebook version.
