Thirst - Book Review

Many, many years ago I heard Scott Harrison speak at my church about how he started Charity: Water, a non-profit that brings clean drinking water to people living in third world countries. The book Thirst is Harrison's story for everyone to hear.

I picked up an advance review copy of this book from last year's BookExpo, and I was really excited to read it given what I knew about the non-profit. I used to own a Charity: Water T-shirt! But as you can see, it took me awhile to get around to reading the book.

If you're interested in what the organization does and how it does it, then definitely check out this book. Not only is it a tale of people helping other people (and doing so in a way that can really make a difference - access to clean drinking water can help eradicate disease, empower women and girls, and so much more), but it's also a tale of a man reaching rock bottom after searching for the wrong things in life. And after reaching rock bottom (Harrison actually had a threat on his life), realizing that his skills could be better used to serve others.

What I found most interesting is that Harrison couldn't have reached his final story without his prior experiences. He needed the skill of marketing and event planning to help Charity: Water grow, for instance.

This is the kind of book that makes you wonder what you're doing with your own life. Do you enjoy reading inspiring stories like this? What charities do you support? Let me know in the comments!

Thirst is published by Currency and is on bookstore shelves now. I received a free ARC at BookExpo 2018.
