If you've ever read Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, then you'll be familiar with some of the content of Maid. But unlike Ehrenreich, Land was not a journalist going undercover to expose the world of minimum wage jobs. Land really was homeless. She worked a low-paying job as a housecleaner just so she and her daughter could have a roof over their heads, and it wasn't a very good roof.
But Land wasn't living in poverty because she was lazy. She was working. She was doing everything she could to rise above the system.
You have to read this book! I want to give this book to everyone I know! It's such an amazing story and one that everyone needs to know.
Maid is published by Hachette Books and is available on bookstore shelves now. I received a free review copy at BookExpo.
