I received a free copy of The Undercurrent by Sarah Sawyer as part of Zibby Publishing's Little Free Library Week. Essentially, I was to read the book and then between June 16 and June 23 leave my copy in a nearby Little Free Library.
If you live near me, you'll definitely want to grab this one from the Little Free Library, or find a copy in a Little Free Library near you!
I really enjoyed this novel, which takes place in the present through our main character Bee, and the past through Bee's mother Mary and Bee's friend's mom Diana. (Don't worry - it's really not that confusing.)
In the present, Bee is a new mother trying to figure out how to be a working mom while keeping her marriage intact. (She's also still bleeding, which is something that she should maybe get checked out...) One of the things straining her marriage is her estrangement from her brother Gus and their mutual childhood friend Leo - as well as her obsession with where Gus and Leo are. She just can't let them go despite how poorly she feels she's been treated by them. Something happened when they were 15 that changed everything, but Bee doesn't know what it is or why she's the one who got left behind.
Meanwhile, back in 1987, a local girl's disappearance infiltrates the lives of Mary and Diana when both women start to suspect their own sons are involved.
But what really happened in 1987? The farther I got into this book, the less I wanted to put it down. And then... the end!!
The "undercurrent" of suspicion is high in this novel, as are the undercurrents of miscommunication and regret. These topics make for good discussion at a book club.
The Undercurrent is published by Zibby Publishing and will be on bookstore shelves on June 24, 2025. (Or find a copy in a Little Free Library if you're lucky!)
